Solute carrier family 2, facilitated glucose transporter member 4 (SLC2A4, GLUT4) is an insulin-regulated glucose transporter found primarily in adipose tissues and striated muscle (skeletal and cardiac). It facilitates the diffusion of circulating glucose down its concentration gradient into muscle and fat cells, playing a key role in removal of glucose from circulation with the response to insulin being regulated by its intracellular localisation. In the absence of insulin, it is retained intracellularly within storage compartments in muscle and fat cells and following insulin stimulation it translocates to the cell surface. SLC2A4 has a phenylalanine on the N-terminus and two Leucine residues and acidic motifs on the C-terminus which are believed to play a key role in its glucose transport function.
