Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNPA1) is one of a family of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). These RNA-binding proteins associate with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and influence pre-mRNA processing and transport. hnRNPA1, regulates alternative splicing, nuclear export, translation, and other RNA processing events
HnRNP A1 is a 34 kDa protein with a modular domain structure consisting of two RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) referred to as unwinding protein 1 (UP1) an intrinsically disordered RGG-rich C terminus and a prion-like domain (PrLD). UP1 is the primary RNA binding domain and the C terminus mediates protein-protein interactions.
Mutations in the HnRNP A1 gene have been linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multisystem proteinopathy (MSP) and other neurodegenerative diseases.
