Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein A2B1 (hnRNPA2B1) is one of a family of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). These RNA-binding proteins associate with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and influence pre-mRNA processing and transport. hnRNPA2B1, regulates alternative splicing, nuclear export, translation, and other RNA processing events and also plays a crucial role in mRNA trafficking in neurons and oligodendrocytes.
HnRNP A2B1 is 37 kDa protein with a modular domain structure consisting of two RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) referred to as unwinding protein 1 (UP1) an intrinsically disordered RGG-rich C terminus and a prion-like domain (PrLD). UP1 is the primary RNA binding domain and the C terminus mediates protein-protein interactions.
Mutations in the HnRNP A2B1 gene have been linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multisystem proteinopathy (MSP) and other neurodegenerative diseases.
